Trace Bronze phosphate with patina, 29.96 x 49.29mm
The ‘Trace’ artifact is designed to be discovered in an urban environment and used by passers by, then left in situation or transported to a new location, for others to find and leave their mark… The small scale sculpture acts as a modern writing tool that is passed on and shared between strangers. The symbol of the mushroom represents unexpected pockets of life, which emerge in different locations all over the world, and spread organically and unpredictably.
The sculpture expresses the concept of trace in two ways… 1. The considered fine tip acts to carve into surfaces such as timber, or may be dipped into ink and used as a scribe to leave a message on porous surfaces; 2. It uses materials that age, developing a patina that traces the story of the objects life itself as well as staining the skin in order to leave a trace on the body. The design encourages individuals to rediscover their own environment both physically and socially by locating the ‘experience’ in hidden and neglected laneways and creating a system of dissipating awareness of the site through the sharing of objects with other city inhabitants. The artifact represents a nurtured creativity in urban environments, fostering an artistic, bohemian identity and allows for it to be passed among all people, thus giving everybody an equal voice. While individuals share and create the experience on a local level, the global mobility of the project reveals a shared humanity in urban contexts.
